Teacher Motivational Plan for Students

 Andrew Stutts

Educators have the biggest impact on motivating students.

Most would agree students learn best when they are motivated to do so. It is also true that educators have the biggest impact on motivating students. Therefore, it is important for teachers to set the correct tone and purposefully create an encouraging environment. This paper will outline my motivational plan for students.
What is motivation?
Motivation is what causes people to behave as they do. Research has shown that motivation can be very complex. The following are characteristics of motivation:
  • An unconscious psychological process rather than a logical one.
  • It is individual.
  • Variable over time.
  • Often a social process involving others.
  • Often affected strongly by experiences from previous years.
Motivational Plan
At the beginning of the course:
  • Get to know students through personal lives, interests and experiences.
  • Teach students the skills they need to know.
  • Be explicit about expectations and policies.
At the middle of the course:
  • Maintain high motivation.
  • Show respect and be collegial.
  • Don’t shame.
  • Model high standards in all activities and appearance.
  • Use visuals to clarify concepts.
  • Use examples and anecdotes to keep students engaged and motivated.
In the last week of the course:
  • Review what they learned.
  • Show them how these concepts will help them in their future.
  • Draw attention to follow on courses and other related classes.
