Technology is not only changing how students learn but also how parents and teachers communicate. There is a myriad of options for communication these days. This presents both opportunities and challenges. One cannot just assume that all families have access to technology. It is not acceptable for even one family to be left out of the loop. Furthermore, families will have different preferences for the medium they want to communicate on.
Despite the aforementioned limitations, there are many opportunities to capitalize with technology. Vital information can be communicated to parents in a timely fashion. It can serve as documentation that important information/communication transpired.
Another downside to technology is the potential to take away the personal touch. Many forms of communication can come across as impersonal. It is part of a teacher’s responsibility to communicate standards, progress, and paths to success. This may not always be appropriate to communicate through technology.
In summary, if technology is utilized it must be done across multiple platforms. Also, plans must be in place for those who do not prefer or have access to technology, or the platforms used. Finally, there is also a steep learning curve when platforms are changed.
